Basil Seeds

Many of us know sweet basil seeds as falooda seeds aka sabja ginjelu. I am writing this post in order to share the amazing properties of these seeds. In India, these seeds have been used extensively by our previous generations and are still used, but somewhat less. You can still find them in the famous falooda drink. These seeds are tasteless and thus can be added to give substance to any drink.

Drinking basil seeds soaked in a cup of water for 5 minutes is an excellent way to keep your body temperature down as they have commendable cooling properties. Also, it is believed that the gelatinous  structure that is obtained in these seeds helps in digestion and free bowel movement. In addition, many claim that the sweet basil seeds have properties that keep your blood pressure in check. Further, the gelatinous texture of the swollen basil seeds makes a filling drink, which could help to curb your appetite if you consume it before meals. Sweet basil seeds are an excellent source of Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA) that is good for your skin.

With so many invigorating properties why not, make it a part of your everyday diet. Here are few ways, how you can incorporate them in your diet.

Soak a tsp of basil seeds in 50 ml water and let it sit for 5 minutes. They will bloat and become gelatinous. You can use them  in lemon juice, rooh afza, rasna, tang or any way you like.

Note:
You can find sabja ginjelu aka falooda seeds aka sweet basil seeds at supermarkets like Ratna deep or any ayurvedic stores. For those of you in cities you can order them online from bigbasket.com.
